Fujian is located in the southeast region of China facing Taiwanacross the Taiwan Strait. It spans an area of 121,400 square kilometres with a population of about 31,830,000. The province has a monsoonal climate in the tropical and subtropical zones and contains 9 districts and cities with 81 counties. Its ethnic groups are mostly Shezu, Huizu, and Gaoshan.
Fujian Province, with its capital Fuzhou, is on China's southeastern coast. The province capital of Fuzhou is a city with many historical monuments. Surrounded by mountains, Fuzhou is also a beautiful city astride the Minjiang River. The Drum Hill suburban Fuzhou affords fine views of both the sea and river, and is an ideal scenic spot for outing. It faces the island province of Taiwan across Taiwan Strait to the east. Neighboring provinces are Zhejiang to the north, Jiangxi to the west, and Guangdong to the south. Fujian occupies an area of around 120,000 square kilometers (about 46,335 square miles). Its permanent resident population is slightly above 34.7 million. Many minority ethnic groups live in Fujian province: Hui, Miao and Manchu.
Fujian has a mild and humid climate. Its mean temperature in the coldest month of January is 5°C (41°F) in the northwest and 12°C (53.6°F) in the southeast. In the hottest month of July, it has an average temperature of 25°C.-30°C (77°F - 86°F). Fujian has abundant rainfall with an average annual precipitation of 800-1,900 mm, Summer and autumn is the typhoon season, which usually brings with it torrential rain.
Fujian is blessed with a rich history, famous historical sites and beautiful natural landscapes. These make Fujian a unique tourist attraction. However, it is not yet a much worn traveler's path.
Mount Wuyi (Wu Yi Shan) may enlighten you with its wonderland tour. Its beautiful mountains, vigorous rocks and limpid waters are legendary. Gulangyu Island, also called "the Garden on the Sea" by people in Xiamen, is a world of sea breezes, sunshine and exotic architecture with a Mediterranean flavor. Nanputuo Temple, among the four well-known Buddhist shrines in the nation, has the longest and most prestigious history.
Earth Towers of the Hakkas in Yongding area are the much fabled mountain residences in this world of make believe. The industrious and facile Hui'an women in the south of Fujian add much to their folk customs. The Kaiyuan Temple looks splendid, glittering and grand despite its age. Fujian also is a place where famous national heroes like Lin Zexu and Zheng Chenggong lived and won their seats of honor in history books.
Fujian boasts its numerous tourist attractions, both in beautiful scenery and in outstanding and influential figures. Tourist areas include mountains, rivers and well-known cities: Quanzhou, one of China's famous historic and cultural ancient cities, is a human and scenic spot approved by the UNESCO; Xiamen, known as "Garden on the Sea", is a picturesque economic special zone; Wuyi Mountains is famous for its peaks and Wuyi tea; Kaiyuan Temple in Quanzhou, Yongquan Temple in Fuzhou, Guanghua Temple in Putian and Nanshan Temple in Zhangzhou are the four famous grand ancient temples in Fujian. In addition, there are historic relics left behind by Zhuxi and Zheng Chenggong.
Numerous varieties of flowers and fruits abound in Fujian, its longan production ranks first in the country. Lichee, orange, banana, loquat, pineapple and olive are also widely grown. Of all the flowers and plants in Fujian, well-known Zhangzhou narcissuses come first on the list, and sword-leave cymbidium is a close second. A major producer of dried bamboo shoots; mushroom, silver agaric, rosin and herb medicine in the country, Fujian is also one of the major tea-producing provinces in China. Fishery is very much developed along the coast. Its lancelet is world-famous while its sea clam is widely regarded as a delicacy. Fujian boasts numerous traditional handicraft items, such as bodiless lacquer ware, shoushan stone carving, cork carving, Dehua porcelain, Xiamen pearl embroidery, Quanzhou puppets, Zhangzhou cotton picture and Yongchun lacquer basket. |
