Bahamas is the self-governing, independent country and is situated in the Atlantic Ocean. The country consist of two thousand cays (a small, low-elevation, sandy island formed on the surface of coral reefs) and seven hundred islands that together form a cluster of islands over 100,000 square miles of ocean. The islands have the clearest water with a visibility of over 200 feet. The country’s capital is Nassau; Nassau is the largest city, and commercial centre of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Bahamas is world’s 160th country with 13,878 km square total area. According to 2007 estimate, the country has 330,549 population, ranking 177th in the world. The gateway to the Bahamas is Bimini Island, Bimini island is closest to United States. The highest point in the country is Mount Alvernia, which has an altitude of 63 meters on Cat Island. Bahamas is divided into thirty-one districts. The economy of the Bahamas depends on tourism and offshore finance. Tourism accounts for two thirds of the gross domestic product (GDP) and offshore finance accounts for about 15 per cent of GDP. The government is also aspiring to introduce agriculture, fishing, manufacturing and e-commerce for the economic growth of the country. The country is classified as an upper middle-income developing country and has the third highest per capita income in the western hemisphere.
