Azerbaijan is the largest and most populous country in the South Caucasus, lying between the two continents of Europe and Asia. It is surrounded by Armenia, Caspian Sea, Georgia, Iran and Russia. The territory of Azerbaijan extends 400 km from north to south, and 500 km from west to east. The country has a Autonomous Republic, Nakhchivan, which is surrounded by Armenia, Iran and Turkey. The country’s capital is Baku, Baku is the largest port and largest city of Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan is world’s 113th country with 86,600 km square total area. According to 2008 estimate, the country has 8,699,000 population, ranking 91st in the world.
Azerbaijan is divided into fifty nine districts, eleven cities and one Autonomous republic of Nakhchivan, which is further divided into seven districts and a city.
Azerbaijan is considered one of the most important spots in the world for oil exploration and development. The country has enough oil and natural gas. Lesser Caucasus has most of the country’s antimony, chromium, cobalt, complex ore, copper, gold, iron, manganese, molybdenum, silver and titanium. The agricultural scientific research institutes of the country are focused on meadows and pastures, horticulture and subtropical crops, green vegetables, viticulture and wine-making, cotton growing and medicinal plants. In some lands it is profitable to grow grain, potatoes, sugar beets, cotton and tobacco. |
