Anguilla is a British Overseas Territory, 16 miles long, and 3 miles at her widest point. It is situated in Eastern Caribbean, most northerly of the Leeward Islands. The island’s capital is The Valley; The Valley is the main town of the island. Boat racing is the National sport of Anguilla.
Anguilla is the world’s 220th country with 102 km square area. According to 2006 estimate, the island has 13,477 population, ranking 212 in the world. Anguilla is a flat, low-lying island of coral and limestone in the Caribbean Sea, east of Puerto Rico. The economy of island depend upon Tourism, Offshore Companies and Offshore Banking. It also produce Natural Resources. Agriculture is unsuitable because of island’s thin arid soil.
Around 4000 years ago, Anguilla was a lush island covered in dense rain forest. It was discovered by Amerindian peoples who came by dugout canoes and rafts from South America's mainland. Amerindians called Anguilla with a name Malliouhana which meant arrow-shape sea serpent and they developed villages, farms and ceremonial sites to their gods. |
