Albania is surrounded by Greece to the south-east, Montenegro to the north, Kosovo to the northeast, and the Republic of Macedonia to the east. It has a coast on the Adriatic Sea to the west and on the Ionian Sea to the southwest. The country’s capital is Tirana; Tirana is the largest city and also the financial capital of the country. The Albanian republic is a parliamentary democracy founded under a constitution renewed in 1998. Elections are now held every four years to a unicameral 140-seat chamber, the People's Assembly. Albania is the world's 139th country with 28,748 km square total area. Its coastline is 362 km long and extends along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. The highest mountain is Korab situated in the district of Dibra, reaching up to 2,753 m. According to 2009 estimate, the country has 3,600,523 population, ranking 130th in the world. There is a large variety of ethnic groups which includes Albanian, Greeks, Aromanians (Vlachs), Torbesh, Gorani, Macedonians, Roma, Montenegrins, Bulgarians, Balkan Egyptians and Jews. The overall literacy rate in Albania is 98.7%, the male literacy rate is 99.2% and female literacy rate is 98.3%. Albania is divided into 12 Administrative Divisions which are further divided into 36 Districts and 351 Municipalities. | |
